Our Beginnings

The Albukhary Foundation has grown from strength to strength since it was established in 1996. The personal charity of prominent Malaysian businessman Syed Mokhtar Albukhary, it was founded to give form and structure to the charitable activities that has undertaken from the day he set up his first company in 1974.

In the early years, the foundation’s initiatives were solely focused on Malaysia, with programmes aimed at alleviating poverty and fostering racial harmony in this multicultural nation. As his business grew and he established presence in the international arena, so his charity work developed. The foundation’s projects came to span four great land masses: Asia, Europe, Africa and Australia, proving that charity and commerce can move in tandem for the greater good of all.

The foundation envisions the forging of a more equitable and tolerant world through health, welfare and educational programmes and through cultural and religious initiatives that bridge the divide between the haves and have-nots, and between Muslim and non-Muslim worlds.
